DarkLinks 28: Dangers of the Sinner’s Prayer

This edition of DarkLinks is a little more gloomy than others. The overall theme is danger. In the first article we feature a cutting perspective on dealing with heretics that the author believes is lost. Next, my colleague JD Rucker over at NOQ Report wrote a reaction to Paul Washer explaining the dangers of the Sinner’s Prayer. I have personally heard people who live a pagan lifestyle say they were Christian because they prayed that prayer. So this is a good reference point from which to dive deeper into this discussion. Next, John MacArthur wrote a piece about the misuse of “God is love” specifically by people who do not acknowledge the need for substitutionary atonement. This was a sharp, well written piece surfacing the real debate being had. We end on a more optimistic note. I’ve been thinking for a while that Hungary (and Poland) may be the source of a revival in Europe. Capstone Report dives deeper into their Prime Minister’s theology.

The Children of Men: Understanding the Human Origins of Heresy

By Ed Dingess @ Reformation Charlotte

The church should be no less busy today contradicting and stopping the mouths of heretics as it was from its beginning. Instead, many in the church have adopted the tactics and strategies of the world. They begin by labeling people who are concerned with doctrinal truth as unkind and mean-spirited and overly critical of others. Perhaps some would accuse them of being intellectual bullies. This kind of name-calling and classification is used to manipulate people’s behavior. No one likes to be called a bully or unloving. Hence, the tactic succeeds in silencing those who are simply concerned about the well being of the church and it cuts the fence line so that sheep can wander out, and wolves may wonder in! Don’t buy into the weak-minded tactics of these swindlers of God’s flock is my advice.

I hope to take you back in time to look at some of the ancient heresies with which the church had to contend from nearly her inception. It is my goal to link those ancient heresies with the modern ones about which we contend today. Moreover, my purpose is not merely to point things out and help you make these connections. My purpose is to influence change.

I want the Church to begin to excommunicate the heretics, be they simple members, Sunday school teachers, elders, pastors, theologians, and scholars. There is no place for the serpent in the church, regardless of the disguise he may use. When we find the snake in the garden, we cut its head off. When we discover the heretic in God’s community, we take swift action. We lovingly confront them, at first giving them the benefit of doubt. We continue to work with them while managing their influence.

Why the ‘Sinner’s Prayer’ is so dangerous

By JD Rucker @ NOQ Report

In theory, it’s a fine technique. It can even work from time to time when the subject takes the event as a starting point for them to explore their faith, read the Bible, and begin a life of prayer and repentance. But all too often, it’s a quickly forgotten moment that not only confuses people about what it means to be a born-again Christian, but may even hamper them from seeking proper acceptance of the Lord.

The Ultimate Demonstration of God’s Love

By John MacArthur @ Grace To You

In other words, Scripture does not merely say “God is love” and leave it to the individual to interpret subjectively what that means. There is a very important doctrinal context in which the love of God is explained and illustrated. To affirm that God is love while denying the doctrine underlying and defining that truth is to render the truth itself meaningless.

But that is precisely what many have done. For example, our adversaries, the theological liberals, are very keen to affirm that God is love; yet they often flatly deny the significance of Christ’s substitutionary atonement. They suggest that because God is love, Christ did not actually need to die as a substitutionary sacrifice to turn away the divine wrath from sinners. They portray God as easy to mollify, and they characterize the death of Christ as an act of martyrdom or a moral example for believers—denying that it was God’s own wrath that needed to be propitiated through a blood sacrifice, and denying that He purposely gave His Son in order to make such an atonement. Thus, they reject the consummate manifestation of God’s love, even while attempting to make divine love the centerpiece of their system.

Viktor Orbán is the World’s Most Powerful Calvinist

By Capstone Report

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán battles George Soros, global secularists and anti-nationalist elites to create a world safe for Christians.

Not since the Calvinist William of Orange united a diverse coalition to save the liberties of Europe from the overreaching aggression of Louis XIV has a Calvinist politician attempted to shape the world order like Viktor Orbán. Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary, is a leader unafraid of his nation’s Christianity, He loves his people and their history. That is why he is a trailblazer in the rediscovery of nationalism in the West.
