David Platt justifies disobedience to Scripture from the pulpit

The man known for his “radical” faith has a radical faith in his head of the church, government. David Platt is daring to touch the passage he deliberately proliferated the disobedience of, Hebrews 10:19-25. During the lockdowns, David Platt was quick to demonstrate his radical faith by shutting down his megachurch over a virus with over a 99% survival rate upon simple request from his liege lord.

It was sinful for churches to renounce Christ as head of the church and cede to government ecclesiastical authority. It’s not as though those with discernment could not see that lockdowns were never about public health. That’s why Canada is arresting pastors. That’s why the UK can have lockdowns amidst zero deaths.

David Platt is simping for the state in this sermon preached on May 23, 2021, in which he addresses the passages those of us who opposed church lockdowns were citing. David Platt goes on at length saying that the church could not meet when he made the decision to not meet. Coronavirus was not a hurricane that would blow down your building or a snow storm that would impede travel. He goes on, at length peddling panic porn about India. He even says “by God’s grace” we had lockdown measures. This is only grace if government is your god.

The exegetical problems grow deeper. If you look at the passage of Hebrews 10:19-25, there is no condition for pandemic.

19 Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

David Platt claims, in his exegesis, that the church was “considering one another” when it decided to lockdown. This is a blatant misapplication of the text. Moreover, David Platt is using verse 24 to justify disobedience to verse 25. We would not use an abundance of obedience to the eighth commandment to justify disobedience to the ninth.

But now that the government has said it’s okay to gather, David Platt is trying to, effeminately, encourage people to resume in person worship gatherings. David Platt later contradicts his interpretation of the passage that justified his defiance to the Bible to make a case for the necessity of not forsaking the assembly of the saints.

False teaching is disqualifying for a pastor, but justifying sin from the pulpit is an equal category of unqualified.

  1. Personally, I would not use Hebrews 10:19-25 as a COMMANDMENT from God to indicate that we MUST assemble in a pandemic.

Let’s look at the OT for a moment, regarding those who are INFECTED with an INFECTIOUS disease. They were told to GET OUT OF THE CAMP, and isolate, until a priest determined that they were well again. They were determined to be UNCLEAN.

Why was this isolation COMMANDED? So as not to infect other people. God does not take the disease away…unless it is by a miracle.

It’s just common sense stuff. As a Christian, we are also taught that if two or more are gathered in his name, Jesus is RIGHT THERE with them. All it takes is TWO. Husband and Wife, or brother and sister, or however you wish to add the two. It doesn’t have to be in a church building with hundreds of others, some of who may be VULNERABLE to catch the disease, even if the statistics are right.

It’s better to be safe, than sorry. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Christians are making this issue much worse that it actually should be, and making a laughing stock out of us with the world.

This is not a salvation issue, whether you do, or don’t follow Hebrews 10:19-25 in a pandemic. It’s a HEALTH issue. It’s also likewise not a salvation issue to petition the government regarding our freedoms, either, as it sets the record straight. It’s our constitutional right to be stupid!

    1. The law is about isolating the sick, not the healthy. You advocate living in fear when we are not called to live in fear. There was never scientific justification for lockdowns and if you still believe that it was about public health you are incredibly naive.

      1. The problem with your theory is that you have no clue who the sick is in church.

But I’m glad to know that you have no problem of putting other people’s lives at risk. You missed the point regarding TWO people is all is needed to gather, not one hundred!

Just because you have NO FEAR, doesn’t mean that your congregation won’t die. You do separate yourself from those with the common cold, so that you won’t catch what they got, because you fear catching a cold. Don’t deny it! You do fear a cold. You do fear sniffles. You do fear fevers.

        Ed Chapman

        1. There were many, not enough, churches that never shut down and weren’t graveyards. What you don’t understand is that shutting down because the government asked you to is proclaiming that government is head of the church. And you slander. I never isolated myself from anyone who had COVID in my family. If you are scared, stay home, but it was sinful for pastors to shut their doors rendering many without a local congregation and being derelict in their call.

          1. In my view, this issue is not about the government at all. But it’s YOUR main argument. My argument is about simple common sense, that you don’t put other peoples lives in danger even if the government is wrong. And it is a FALSE claim to say that church’s that do close are putting the government ahead of the church. That is absurd. It is NOT SINFUL to close the doors IN ORDER TO GET CONTROL of the situation.

According to 1 John 3:4, sin is the transgression of the law [of Moses]. Romans 3:20, for by the law [of Moses] is the knowledge of sin.

NO ONE was sinning by closing their doors, no one was sinning by keeping them open. When 2 or more are gathered, there Jesus is. We do have LIVE STREAM internet, and telephones today. It’s not as though we didn’t have ALTERNATIVES.

If I were you, I’d consider 1 Corinthians chapter 13.

            Ed Chapman

          2. You can’t argue that it’s putting people in danger to keep church open and it’s not a sin. Pick one. Obeying a command in Scripture is not an issue of Christian liberty. Obviously you are not well informed on the lethality of coronavirus before, during, and post lockdowns. The lack of necessity in closing down furthers my argument that the church was in sin for closing down and being derelict in their mission.

          3. Yes I can! I did. I will do it again, too! The Law of Moses determines what sin is. Romans 3:20, 1 John 3:4, oh, and Romans 7:7, where Paul states that he had not known sin but by the law.

But in the NT, anything NOT OF FAITH is sin. So, you define sin as something different.

Also, you and I have a completely different take on what Hebrews 10:25 ACTUALLY means. You think it means CHURCH ON SUNDAY! I argue that it outlines what the purpose of gathering together is meant for.

What’s it meant for? LOVING YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF!

It’s not meant for listening to a preacher preach on Sunday. It’s for DOING GOOD THINGS FOR OTHERS! We can listen to a preacher on TV. They have one 24/7 on several channels. You have YouTube!

We have a joke about those who missed Sunday sermon, where the preacher tells that person, “We missed your money, uh, I mean, you on Sunday!”.

So what on earth is your issue about GATHERING together? What is YOUR PURPOSE of the gathering? To preach? NO NO NO!

            Ed Chapman

          4. I will leave you with the following:

            John 4:20-24
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Meaning: You can worship God ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYHOW, whereever and whenever, not at a set time, or set place. ALONE, or with others.

So what is the GATHERING TOGETHER in Hebrews 10:25 really all about, when reading the previous verses that you laid out?

            Sunday Sermon? NO!

            Ten percent donation? NO!

            EXHORTING (encouraging) ONE ANOTHER! YES!

DOING GOOD TO ONE ANOTHER. YES!

            HELPING EACH OTHER OUT? YES!

How much encouraging really goes on in church when the doors are open? VERY LITTLE, I can tell you that! Who has TIME while gathered to encourage anyone of anything when a preacher is too busy preaching, or the congregation is singing pre-selected scheduled songs?

Hebrews 10:25 is not discussing SUNDAY CHURCH. It’s context is an EVERYDAY, 7 days a week thing! Everyday! Two or more. Slow your reading down and ponder each word carefully, as you come to the finale’ of GATHER TOGETHER. You will discover it isn’t discussing church doors at all.

            Ed Chapman

      2. This also has me wondering, tho, since a pastorate is a taxable income, if this is really about losing the congregations 10% donations, more than it is about being gathered together with Jesus.

      3. You had said that the law is about separating the sick, not the healthy.

        BUT, why is that?

Could it be because the healthy FEAR getting what the sick have?

If there was no fear, then why send the sick out of the camp in the first place?

        Ed Chapman

  2. Ray,

I don’t think you should use the phrase “mangina”. It implies something very crude.

    Robert

  3. Excellent comment chapmaned 24.

    Whatever happened to,

In Essentials Unity, In Non-Essentials Liberty, In All Things Charity?

I sense a lot of anger in this young one!

May the Lord bless him by smoothing his edges off.
