The man known for his “radical” faith has a radical faith in his head of the church, government. David Platt is daring to touch the passage he deliberately proliferated the disobedience of, Hebrews 10:19-25. During the lockdowns, David Platt was quick to demonstrate his radical faith by shutting down his megachurch over a virus with over a 99% survival rate upon simple request from his liege lord.
It was sinful for churches to renounce Christ as head of the church and cede to government ecclesiastical authority. It’s not as though those with discernment could not see that lockdowns were never about public health. That’s why Canada is arresting pastors. That’s why the UK can have lockdowns amidst zero deaths.
David Platt is simping for the state in this sermon preached on May 23, 2021, in which he addresses the passages those of us who opposed church lockdowns were citing. David Platt goes on at length saying that the church could not meet when he made the decision to not meet. Coronavirus was not a hurricane that would blow down your building or a snow storm that would impede travel. He goes on, at length peddling panic porn about India. He even says “by God’s grace” we had lockdown measures. This is only grace if government is your god.
The exegetical problems grow deeper. If you look at the passage of Hebrews 10:19-25, there is no condition for pandemic.
19 Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
David Platt claims, in his exegesis, that the church was “considering one another” when it decided to lockdown. This is a blatant misapplication of the text. Moreover, David Platt is using verse 24 to justify disobedience to verse 25. We would not use an abundance of obedience to the eighth commandment to justify disobedience to the ninth.
But now that the government has said it’s okay to gather, David Platt is trying to, effeminately, encourage people to resume in person worship gatherings. David Platt later contradicts his interpretation of the passage that justified his defiance to the Bible to make a case for the necessity of not forsaking the assembly of the saints.
False teaching is disqualifying for a pastor, but justifying sin from the pulpit is an equal category of unqualified.
