Steve Deace is one of the most prominent Christian political commentators in America and is especially influential in the Iowa Caucuses. On Monday’s shows, a member of Team Evangelical Dark Web got a question read and answered on the air. The question was about whether Christians should stop watching The Chosen because the fact that they allow pride flags on set is indicative of the other theological problems with the show. In other words the culture producing the show won’t produce a biblical product. Steve Deace’s response was a step in the based direction compared to his prior stance on The Chosen, but he ultimately gets fired up saying that on the set of his movie, Nefarious, this would never have happened.
Initially Steve Deace claims that what he has seen of The Chosen, season one, did not present a “tainted” Jesus. But Deace went on to say he hasn’t watched anything beyond season one. Deace answers that when the gayness on set seeps into the show, then it is time to stop watching. But then he pivots to his own movie production.
Deace boldly says, “hell no was anyone flying a pride flag on the Nefarious set. Hell no was that ever happen[ing]. Not in a million years.”
He goes on to say:
“I can’t even imagine why anyone would think they’d even try to get away with that. Like what is the atmosphere on set, and within your production, that would make people think that that’s kosher on any level at all?”
Steve Deace states that there were people with different beliefs on his movie set, pointing out the guy who played the priest in the movie, perhaps referencing Evangelical Dark Web’s review of Nefarious in the process.
“I can’t even imagine how I would have reacted to visit my set to see a rainbow flag on it… Do you think I even worried about that? No, because I wouldn’t have done business with people that would have put me in a position where I thought I had to worry about such things. Was just never going to happen. Was just unthinkable, unspeakable.
Before concluding Steve Deace said, “You are welcome to have your opinion on your own time. You are not welcome to have it on ours.”
Steve Deace makes it clear that a Christian production would not allow such things on set and that such offense would be unthinkable. Dallas Jenkins, meanwhile, practices secular neutrality on set and allows blasphemous displayes on a show that claims to be about Jesus.
Steve Deace in the past has touted The Chosen, and they even sponsored his show late last year. However, his unwillingness to watch season two in order to binge Jesus tells you how good he thinks the show really is or isn’t.
