At a Hannity Town Hall, Donald Trump was surprisingly asked a good question about his faith and how it had changed since running for President. In 2015, Donald Trump made it clear he never asked God for forgiveness. Since the zeitgeist has confronted Donald Trump, to put it mildly, it is worth asking whether the circumstances moved him closer to God. We’ve seen this with Tucker Carlson and a number of conservative media figures, but this is not to be seen in Donald Trump.
After complimenting the question and joking about how he did not know what a subpoena was before running for office, Trump changed the question to “are you glad you ran?” and answered that question instead.
And then he meanders into Evangelicals whom he has a good relationship with which tangentially answers the second part of the original question which asked him who were his mentors in faith. In doing so he touts Paula White and Franklin Graham. He pronounces his name “Grame.”
Analysis
Donald Trump does not claim to be a Christian, yet it is disappointing to see that Trump appears no closer to being regenerate than when he made his comments in 2015, especially as many Christians love Trump. As for Franklin Graham, he takes a massive L here. Franklin Graham could easily be characterized as someone who groveled for Trump’s favor even briefly endorsing Paula White’s book in the process. Yet after all this sycophantic behavior, Trump gets his name wrong. It’s especially worth noting that Lindsay Graham is one of Trump’s closest confidants in elected office. So there’s not really an excuse.
