David Platt and McLean Bible Church Lose Million Dollar Lawsuit

Since 2021, lawsuits have been plaguing McLean Bible Church. Salvador Cordova is a plaintiff in one of the lawsuits and he joined Evangelical Dark Web to talk about their recent victory in court against David Platt’s McLean Bible Church.

There are two lawsuits against MBC. The first one involved an election of a slate of elders that dissenting members are trying to overturn. This lawsuit was initially dismissed but it won an appeal. Cordova is not on this lawsuit which he describes as very technical. Instead, he is a plaintiff in a lawsuit suing MBC for being a Southern Baptist Church in violation of the church’s constitution. This lawsuit has won seven pretrial motions which will ultimately resolve much of the case. The result of the lawsuit will be the public release of documents pertaining to MBC’s connection to the Southern Baptist Convention including depositions and financial documents.

A recent congregational budget meeting showcased that MBC spent a million dollars to combat a lawsuit that was not demanding money but rather transparency. Believing that members would look up this lawsuit, Salvador Cordova published a video detailing his account.

Cordova criticizes David Platt for preaching a “poverty gospel” which was a mismatch of MBC from the beginning. McLean Bible Church was a church that had a congregation of politicians, dignitaries, and people who worked in government. The t-shirt-wearing hip pastor was never a good fit for this congregation. His numbers show that MBC had 14-15000 in-person congregants before Platt and they currently have around 4000. Ultimately, Cordova credits the wokeness with MBC’s precipitous decline. The installation and loosing of Mike Kelsey who he described as having a Louis Farrakhan influence contributed to the increasingly hostile church for white Christians.

Future of MBC

Cordova believes the installation of Mike Kelsey is meant to give David Platt an exit strategy. In theory, he must give 60 days’ notice, but he and others eagerly anticipate the resignation of Platt. As for Kelsey, Cordova believes he is the newly installed captain of a sinking ship.

Cooking the books

McLean Bible Church is fudging its financial numbers, Cordova claims. A congregation that is 1/3 of its prior size with a younger crowd is not able to sustain the giving that this church is accustomed to. But even still, the current numbers raise questions such as whether the North American Mission Board is involved or whether the sale of assets is sustaining the church. Evangelical Dark Web reported on this connection in January which was related to our coverage of the MBC lawsuit.

There is a lot of money going around and the upcoming release of documents will expose the true relationship between McLean Bible Church and the Southern Baptist Convention. MBC’s million-dollar defense has resulted in defeat and now they face exposure and greater scrutiny.
