The Annual Southern Baptist Convention is next week, and the Resolutions Committee has unveiled the resolutions they might bring to the floor for a vote. Ray Fava, the founder of Evangelical Dark Web, joined Jon Harris of Conversations The Matter to discuss the resolutions.
Most notably the SBC is advancing a resolution on religious liberty whereby it insists that the government has no role to play in bind people’s consciences on religious matters. While Baptists have historically opposed established religion, it was not until 1925 that Baptists confessionally supported religious liberty for pagans.
The SBC has two resolutions on war, one reiterating Just War Theory and the other supporting Israel. It’s ironic that the the SBC wants to highlight their support of the Iraw War in 2003 under JWT while also condemning Russia who could easily check the boxes for JWT. Meanwhile, the resolution supporting Israel is this year’s woke resolution, as it creates a special category for antisemitism.
There are two resolutions on abortion, one that perpetuates the lie that welfare programs would prevent abortion and another that condemns IVF. This condemnation of IVF is the strongest resolution since 2021 on substance and timing.
