Andrew Klavan Uses John MacArthur

Andrew Klavan Uses John MacArthur To Promote Gay Agenda

On July 22, 2025, The Daily Wire host Andrew Klavan posted a 9-minute video discussing what John MacArthur said about his gay son Spencer. We were interested in what Klavan had to say because he has been taking heat lately regarding his son’s sinful lifestyle. What we found was absolutely disgusting, and a clip was posted on 𝕏 in order to bring attention to this travesty. The tweet went extremely viral as it was picked up by several other large accounts like Right Response Ministries and America First Post. Essentially, Andrew Klavan was using a private conversation with John MacArthur in order to defend his son’s sinful lifestyle, and he was doing so after MacArthur died so as to leave no opportunity for rebuttal.

Synopsis of Andrew Klavan’s Comments

Andrew Klavan begins by paying tribute to John MacArthur, who had just passed away at the age of 86. Klavan describes MacArthur as a “great pastor” whom he respected highly, despite frequent deep disagreements. He notes that both lived by their visions of faith and that God would judge them accordingly, expressing hope that their differing opinions might still fare well in the final judgment.

Klavan then shifts to discussing homosexuality, a topic on which MacArthur was “very strong in opposing.” Andrew agrees that society should be centered on traditional family structures—mom, dad, and children—and views anything else as culturally perverse. However, he differentiates this from individual treatment, arguing that people are born gay, akin to being born with conditions like spina bifida or genius. He speculates that it may originate in the womb and asserts that nature produces a small percentage of gay individuals—around 5%—comparing it to salt in soup: too little makes it bland, too much inedible (referencing a quote from French conservative Marine Le Pen). Klavan advocates leaving gay people alone to deal with their own sins, emphasizing personal accountability to God over confrontation.

He mentions his own son, Spencer Klavan, who is gay and works at The Daily Wire, clarifying that this did not change his longstanding views, as he has worked with gay people throughout his career. Andrew stresses that individuals should consult God about their lives, and he focuses on his own sins rather than others’.

A section of the original video has been removed, which recounts how Klavan came to be in attendance at Grace Community Church. After the service, he recounts a meeting arranged with MacArthur, possibly by someone like Jennifer Ellis or one of MacArthur’s associates. Upon entering MacArthur’s office, the pastor shook Klavan’s hand, looked him in the eye meaningfully, and said, “I just want to tell you how much I like and admire Spencer’s work at The Daily Wire.” Klavan interprets this as MacArthur signaling agreement with his beliefs—that no one falls outside God’s love and that the primary response should be to express that love in imitation of God. He says with dramatic effect, “He too believes as I believe,” which is a massive leap based on a single comment on his son’s writing. The clip ends abruptly here because Klavan immediately transitions to critiquing voices in the MAGA movement (i.e., Christian Nationalists) who oppose including so-called gay conservatives, like Spencer.

Con Inc. Circles the Wagons

The viral clip quickly drew criticism from several notable figures in Con Inc: Megan Basham, Joel Berry, Lydia Leitermann (Sour Patch Lyds), and even Andrew Klavan himself.

  • In a quote tweet, Andrew Klavan attempted to refute our framing of the video, “Yes, except I’m not saying that at all. You’re completely right except for being totally wrong. I fully and repeatedly acknowledged MacArthur and I were far apart on this.” But as stated earlier, Andrew said that John believes as he does, whatever that means. This is clearly doublespeak.
  • As a reply, Megan Basham, a journalist at The Daily Wire, wrote, “I 100% disagree with what Andrew said here. But I don’t think he was suggesting that MacArthur secretly thought homosexuality was OK. I think he was just saying that MacArthur was being kind to his son despite his very strong convictions and teachings about homosexuality.” She views the anecdote as an act of kindness rather than endorsement, while conveniently ignoring Klavan’s misrepresentation of MacArthur’s compliment.
  • Joel Berry, managing editor at The Babylon Bee, replied bluntly: “Not at all what he said you liar.” It is highly unlikely that Berry watched the video or read the tweet.
  • Lydia Leitermann, former TimCast cohost who now works independently, posted two critical replies. The first called for a community note to be added to our tweet: “[Community Note] needed. Factual error. Intentional bias. Clipping of context for engagement bait. Violation of 𝕏 terms of service.” The second attacked us personally: “So you didn’t even listen. Take ‘Baptist’ out of your name. You’re an awful spokesman.” Lydia had the most dramatic crash out of any of the respondents.

Concluding Thoughts

There is no reason to believe Andrew Klavan’s framing of his conversation with John MacArthur. John was a stalwart on this issue for the entirety of his ministry, and he was not one to speak in code when in a one on one conversation. It’s highly unlikely that MacArthur even knew Spencer was gay in 2020, as this didn’t become widely known until much later. Ultimately, this was a disgusting stunt by Klavan in order to run interference for his son, and thankfully, with our help, it failed miserably.

More broadly speaking, this incident underscores the continuing battle between the more mainstream Con Inc voices and the dissident right that desires to be a distinctly Christian movement. We simply cannot win a culture war by tolerating and even celebrating sexual degeneracy within our ranks, and we will continue to expose anyone who attempts to smuggle this into our tent.
