Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery Tuesday at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital to remove a nodule from his right lung. The procedure confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma. The 71-year-old pontiff had the lower lobe of his right lung removed in a 90-minute operation the Vatican described as successful with no complications. He is expected to remain hospitalized for about a week.
The Vatican released the update Tuesday evening. Tests on the removed tissue established the cancer diagnosis. No further details on staging or treatment plans have been disclosed. Leo had announced the need for surgery over the weekend after doctors discovered the nodular lesion during routine checks. The procedure marks the first major health event of his papacy.
Lung adenocarcinoma is the most common form of lung cancer. Its appearance in a pope who does not smoke has drawn immediate attention to environmental and genetic factors under discussion in medical circles. The Vatican has not indicated whether the pope will resume public duties on a reduced schedule or require additional interventions. Official statements have focused on the successful outcome of the operation itself.
Gemelli Hospital has treated multiple popes in recent decades and maintains a dedicated papal suite. Leo’s predecessor, Francis, spent extended periods there during his own health struggles.
No timeline has been given for the pope’s return to the Apostolic Palace or resumption of his full schedule. The Holy See has asked for prayers for his recovery.
