Mike Huckabee, during his time as the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, has shown a greater interest in advancing the interests of his host country than those of his home country. Last July, he hosted a secret meeting with Jonathan Pollard, a Jewish spy, which only came to light after multiple staff members leaked information to the press. It was only last week, during an interview with Tucker Carlson, that Huckabee was asked why he met with a convicted traitor.
Pollard, a former U.S. Navy analyst, served 30 years in prison for passing classified documents to Israel in the 1980s, some of which were later shared with the Soviet Union. He now lives in Israel, where he was welcomed as a hero following his relocation in 2020. Mike Huckabee was advocating for his release back in 2011 and evidently kept in touch.
Mike Huckabee justifies his meeting with Pollard as Pollard thanking Huckabee for offering condolences when his wife died. That’s Huckabee’s story and he stuck with it. Huckabee took issue with the framing of the story as a secret meeting. Huckabee claimed there are no secret meetings at the US Embassy because of the screened entry and all the personnel.

In between Huckabee giving his explanation for why he hosted the meeting and his clumsy admission to it being a meeting, Huckabee described his desire to see Pollard as being convinced by “a number of friends” who believed he had more than served his time,” and wanted to live in Israel, the nation Pollard was loyal to.
Carlson did not ask who these friends were as Huckabee pivoted the conversation towards his indignation towards reporting that the meeting was a secret. But what American friends would convince a politician to let a convicted American traitor get off even easier (Pollard should have gotten the death penalty) so that he can move to Israel?
The natural conclusion is that Huckabee advocated for Pollard’s release, at a minimum, because he was Jewish, not because of the merits of the case. Anything more than the minimum, as revealed in Huckabee’s words, is nefarious. It was a rough interview for Huckabee, but the opening question revealed his lack of adherence to American interests and susceptibility to foreign lobbying.

After the America First movement wins power, there needs to be a serious discussion about whether “Christian” zionism should be legally defined as treason.
We have religious freedom in America, but freedom of religion isn’t a free pass to commit crimes. If a person commits rape or child molestation or murder and then claims “the Bible told me to do that!”, the response from society would be: “your religious beliefs are irrelevant. Go straight to prison.”
In the same way, religious beliefs are not a free pass to commit treason.
