The Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) has long been considered a doctrinally conservative and confessionally reformed denomination, but in recent years it has found itself on the wrong side of Woke Wars II. To briefly review, just like Woke Wars I was about going woke for blacks, Woke Wars II is about going woke for Jews. In both cases, these skirmishes are part of an anti-white movement.
PCA Pastors Being Targeted
Currently in the PCA, there are two teaching elders under investigation for promoting some form of racism, kinism, and/or “Spanglerism” (adherence to the teachings of divested OPC minister Michael Spangler). These are Rev. Zachary Garris (Pastor, Bryce Avenue Presbyterian Church) and Rev. Rick Appleton (Associate Pastor, Providence Presbyterian Church). Additionally, the PCA formed a committee in 2025 to study Christian nationalism and “ethno-nationalism” more broadly, which may result in more disciplinary actions against ruling and teaching elders. While nothing has been published by the committee, there is a social media war being conducted against these men and others by Eli McGowan, who, coincidentally, attends the same church as one of the committee members.
Kindred Hope Church Plant
So, in the midst of this tension and while white pastors are under attack, it is very curious that a church plant is underway in South Fulton, Georgia, called Kindred Hope Church. The city itself is 90% black and is known as the “Black Mecca” of Atlanta. In order to appeal to this majority, the church explicitly claims to value black American excellence, progress, success, culture and its culture’s global influence. The planting pastor and his wife are Howard and Kellie Brown.
Kindred Church was launched in 2023 in partnership with Perimeter Church and Mission to North America’s (MNA’s) African American Ministries. The AAMPCA is very central to this story and will come up later in the article. Perimeter Church interviewed the Brown couple at the time, and they did not hide their motives with respect to planting a hyper-racialized church. Quite frankly, you need not look any further than “Kindred” being part of the name. All of this stands in stark contrast to the current witch hunt for white PCA elders promoting “racist” and “kinist” viewpoints.
Who is Howard Brown?
The founder of Kindred Hope has been pushing CRT in the denomination for many years. Howard Brown was previously an Associate Coordinator for AAMPCA, and he was heavily involved in its annual Leadership Development Resource (LDR), which he promoted in 2020 as a place for the (black) minority to be the majority. He’s literally wearing a shirt with a Wu-Tang Clan bird logo with WAKANDA superimposed.
Then in 2022, Brown was featured by Woke Preacher Clips for a racialized interpretation of David and Goliath. Briefly, he describes David as the racial justice movement, and it just gets worse from there. This guy is every stereotype of a race-obsessed pastor that you can imagine, wrapped up into one.
Conflict of Interest?
There is a potential conflict of interest regarding the funding of the Kindred Hope plant. As stated earlier, Howard Brown previously worked for AAMPCA, and his wife, Kellie, still does as the Operations Director. It seems rather suspicious to us that the couple is employed by the same organization that is sponsoring their church-planting work. Who is actually signing off on that funding decision? Furthermore, there seems to be an effort to bury the funding apparatus. It’s not the PCA sponsoring the plant. It’s not the MNA sponsoring the plant. It’s the AAM of the MNA of the PCA sponsoring the plant. This is merely our opinion in evaluating how this endeavor is being sneakily funded, at least from a cursory view of the situation.
Conclusion
It is 100% clear that the PCA doesn’t think that kinism is a sin in general, but rather only when white people do it. Nevertheless, the denomination, moderated by managerial liberal Kevin DeYoung, will continue its attacks on white elders unabated. We hope that the obvious double standard demonstrated by Kindred Hope will wake up its members and pastors to seek alternative fellowships. Remaining in the denomination seems dangerous at this point for anyone with views one inch to the right of a typical boomercon.
