One of the sad truths behind the murder of Charlie Kirk was that for the Left, assassinations were proven to be an effective strategy. The Right is not a hive mind, but is an environment dictated by particular actors—good and bad. The breakdown of the Right following the assassination of Kirk culminated in a disastrous AmericaFest in 2025 as the movement has splintered between MAGA-types, Blackpillers, Conspiratards, Neocons, and Groypers. The aftermath of his murder revealed how much of a void Kirk filled in maintaining Trump’s coalition. This is not a void his wife can fill. Yet the most capable man to fill the void of Charlie Kirk is none other than Matt Walsh.
Content Direction
In the leadup to his death, Kirk was taking up for Iryna Zarutska’s murder by a black guy being predicated on her race, something that received attacks from James Lindsay as woke. Kirk had dramatically shifted to the Right on various issues of race, feminism, and even became skeptical of Zionism—very much mirroring Vice President JD Vance’s posture towards Israel.
Matt Walsh has taken an effective shift in his content direction. For years, he was somewhat on the backburner at the Daily Wire, but his rightward shift on social issues has ballooned his profile on the same level as Shapiro and Knowles. While it can be argued that Shapiro’s show gets superior views due to pre-roll advertisements, Walsh’s episode clips get equal or better numbers to Shapiro’s despite half as many subscribers on YouTube. This has been used to suggest that Daily Wire has purchased views.
Many might claim that Walsh is “owned” or “controlled” by the Daily Wire, which is notoriously Zionist, thus earning the moniker Israeli Wire. However, the financial turbulence of the company provides a relative immunity for Walsh’s content direction. Daily Wire reportedly laid off 25% of its staff amidst failed investments into entertainment media, and there are metrics suggesting that Shapiro’s reach has declined 85% from its peak. The news side of Daily Wire is also dependent on Facebook traffic and the rise of AI could reduce the need for staffing. Nevertheless, the financial troubles reveal that the Daily Wire needs Matt Walsh more than Matt Walsh needs the Daily Wire. Thus, short of pulling a “Saul Goodman,” he can do whatever he wants and has taken his platform to move the narrative in the rightward direction.
Recently, he has announced his latest documentary called, “The Real History of the Civil Rights Movement” which seeks to correct the history of the Civil Rights Movement, directly attacking Martin Luther King Jr and his movement’s actions in the 1960s. He brands Part 1 as “The New Constitution.” While the content is exclusive behind the paywall, this is clearly an allusion to Christopher Caldwell’s thesis in The Age of Entitlement and Jeremy Carl’s thesis in The Unprotected Class. Both books present scholarly reviews of the impact the Civil Rights Movement had on America, while the invocation of the New Constitution clearly is a shot against the Civil Rights Act. The narrative focus is not merely on the false history of the Civil Rights era, but on the impact that affects politics and media in 2026.
Walsh is not the first to speak about these issues. The point is not about being first, but the ability to shift the narrative. Charlie Kirk was the embodiment of the Overton Window because he was often a lagging reflection of the narrative shift that had occurred in the discourse, so while he might not have been early, his shift on the issue represented narrative victory in institutional adoption of right-wing talking points. He further reflected a move away from libertarian thought on the right, something that is a broader trend. Walsh has this ability to move the ball further down the field and is doing so specifically against the Civil Rights movement. Between the Civil Rights Act and the Hart Cellar Act, most political problems in 2026 America are downstream from these two laws.
Being at an institution like the Daily Wire, Walsh is palatable enough to the Boomers to speak to them about these issues, just as Kirk did with his show. The Boomercons need someone right-wing to speak to them and undo their misconceptions on race, feminism, and immigration. This used to be a void Tucker Carlson filled while at Fox News, but his recent direction has largely traded his longtime audience for one more global and terminally online.
Political Activism
Matt Walsh has demonstrated success in political activism, taking his ability to leverage power beyond the microphone. Most notably, Walsh’s activism led to Tennessee banning transgender mutilation in the state level while also exposing the grotesque practices of Vanderbilt University. Charlie Kirk demonstrated his ability to wield influence more on a national stage, having an ear with President Trump and being influential in the selection of Vance as Vice President. TPUSA’s affiliated PAC has partaken in primary challenges in the 2026 cycle, which included the Indiana Senate primaries, where the Mike Pence incumbents were defeated.
Walsh has yet to demonstrate this ability to leverage his influence nationally. This is the area which Walsh would most need to develop, as it goes beyond the ability to deliver talking points. Politics is a business of relationships. Whether Walsh can broker those relationships remains to be seen, but the capability is there. To his credit, he is absent from the endless cycles of conservative media drama, which goes a long way towards being the unifying figure.
Conclusion
Where Charlie Kirk was the embodiment of the Overton Window, Matt Walsh has become the current bellwether for where the discourse is on the Right. Unlike Kirk, he possesses the ability to be more of a thermostat of narratives rather than a thermometer. Walsh will hardly be the first to talk about MLK revisionism, SSRI medication, or the feminization of society, but he can be the voice that takes these issues to the next level. Political effectiveness is not about receiving credit or being the first to be right but achieving desired policy outcomes. For that reason, Matt Walsh is the true successor to Charlie Kirk.
