Owen Strachan is quickly becoming a lolcow, as his many years of public ministry have culminated in a career of lecturing Christians on the internet with consistently inept cultural commentary funded by a local church’s tithe dollars. In his latest bumblings, Owen Strachan claims that the church needs more single Christians.
We need more single Christians. In shock, some might say to this: “No, we need more families!” It’s true–we need to prioritize families. Most of us are called to marriage–good! But 1 Corinthians 7 shows that single Christians are VITAL to our gospel mission. We need many.
Currently, there is a marriage crisis in America. There are a myriad of single Christians who cannot find mates. They do not want to be single. Singleness is a curse. So Owen Strachan’s commentary is a complete misreading of the current room.
Additionally, Paul’s writing “to the unmarried and to widows” on a call to singleness for the gospel is implied for older believers more than it is for younger ones. But Paul also writes: “But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.” And God also commands, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth.” Both of these are not reconcilable with a call to action for more single Christians than we have now.
The sheer number of Christians called to be single if affirmed in their calling while those called for marriage successful in theirs will result in fewer single Christians, not more. So, not only is Owen Strachan theologically a midwit, he’s mathematically retarded, as well.
