Daniel Penny

Daniel Penny And The Good Samaritan

The Daniel Penny trial was perhaps the most important criminal trial of the year. Though not as sensational as the trials of OJ Simpson or Johnny Depp. the Daniel Penny trial represented a national mood shift in one of the most unlikely of places: New York. In 2021, Derek Chauvin was convicted for the death of George Floyd, both intentional and unintentional homicide, by a jury in a matter of hours. This was done despite the fact that George Floyd had a lethal amount of fentanyl in his body. But Daniel Penny’s acquittal is a reversal of the Derek Chauvin verdict of sorts. And while Evangelical leaders were quick to speak on the justice done, they are reticent with Penny, even though he exemplified one of the most famous parables of Christ.

If you’ve spent enough time in New York, you’ve probably had at least one uncomfortable experience on the subway. So when Jordan Neely, one day, was not only making people uncomfortable but decided to threaten passengers, Daniel Penny intervened to defuse the situation. Seeing people in danger around him, Daniel Penny went to the rescue. It is like the Good Samaritan who when seeing the man on the road provided assistance.

Like the Good Samaritan parable, there were people who refused to render aid, and in this case, it led to the death of Jordan Neely. And for their negligence, Daniel Penny was made to suffer by the prosecutors in New York.

Many see Daniel Penny as a reason not to intervene in a situation to help people, and this exercise in masculinity would be punished. Even though he was acquitted, the process is the punishment, and a New York jury can hardly be considered reliable. However, Daniel Penny has given post-trial interviews countering this notion.

At the end of the day, Daniel Penny is a modern-day Good Samaritan, and should be commended for his actions.
