Pope Francis Health No Longer In Immanent Danger

As of March 12, 2025, Pope Francis remains hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for bilateral pneumonia since February 14. The latest update from the Holy See Press Office, issued on March 10, indicates a positive shift in his condition. Doctors report that the 88-year-old pontiff is no longer in imminent danger of death, with his clinical status showing “further consolidated” improvement. Blood tests and clinical findings reflect a good response to pharmacological therapy, leading medical staff to lift the “guarded prognosis” that had previously underscored his serious condition. Despite this progress, he will remain in the hospital for an unspecified duration to continue treatment, highlighting the severity of the infection and his ongoing recovery needs.

Francis’s hospitalization followed a bout of bronchitis that worsened into pneumonia affecting both lungs, a diagnosis confirmed in mid-February. Earlier in his stay, he faced significant respiratory challenges, requiring high-flow oxygen therapy and noninvasive mechanical ventilation.

By March 3, he no longer needed ventilation, and his condition has since stabilized. The Vatican has noted that while full recovery may be complicated by his age and prior lung issues—part of one lung was removed in his youth due to an infection—his current trajectory is encouraging. Throughout this ordeal, Francis has remained engaged, notably making a call to the Holy Family Parish in Gaza on March 9, reflecting his resilience even amidst illness.

His medical team continues to monitor him closely, and the Vatican has canceled upcoming engagements, such as a jubilee audience, to prioritize his recovery. This update reflects a hopeful turn, though his prolonged hospital stay—nearing a month—underscores the delicate balance of his health at this stage.
