The Annual Southern Baptist Convention has been a top news story every year of Evangelical Dark Web’s short existence, but 2025 is not shaping up to live up to the excitement of its predecessors. Last year’s defeat of the Mike Law Amendment allowed female pastors to persist in the denomination that famously included male only pastorate in its faith statement the, Baptist Faith & Message 2000. So while I do not plan to live stream the entire SBC this year, due to a seriously busy schedule, I will however, give my predictions and provide in-depth coverage, and still be able to watch.
The race for president of the Southern Baptist Convention has thus far been uneventful. Clint Pressley is set to win reelection with ease.
The biggest fight going into SBC25 is the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) which is the convention’s public policy lobbying arm. It has been run by liberals since Richard Land. Orthodox Baptist led for the most part by the Center For Baptist Leadership, are mounting a campaign to defund the ERLC, citing that it’s a poor representative of Southern Baptists. This has been a contentious vote for a few conventions, but pressure is mounting, especially after Brent Leatherwood used Southern Baptist resources for his personal pet project in suppressing the Nashville Tranifesto.
Additionally, there may be a renewed fight for the Law Amendment, which failed in 2024. This would require 2 years of consecutive votes in order to be ratified in the convention’s constitution.
These would be the things to look out for, as well as an effort for financial transparency from the North American Mission Board or accountability for letting MeToo feminism run the convention for a couple of years. But, these are the key battles going into the convention.
