Conor McGregor is one of the biggest showmen in the history of mixed martial arts and a dominant figure in the UFC for several years. However is return in UFC329 was an anticlimactic defeat due to a non-contact knee injury in a rematch against Max Holloway.
Conor McGregor suffered a gruesome compound fracture of his left tibia and fibula in his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 on July 10, 2021. This occurred in the first round when McGregor threw a kick, Poirier checked it (blocked with his shin), and McGregor’s leg buckled awkwardly as he stepped back, with his foot planted. The break was visible and severe, leading to an immediate stoppage (Poirier won by TKO). McGregor underwent surgery with prominent sports doctor Neal ElAttrache, who inserted a rod, plates, and screws, but it would be five years before he would make his return.
In his long-awaited UFC return at UFC 329 against Max Holloway, McGregor injured his right leg/knee attempting an opening roundhouse kick. The stoppage was made 69 seconds into the bout. REports suggest an ACL tear with possible meniscus damage as well.
Although deflated, Conor McGregor, who since his height has become more vocal about his faith, highlighted his faith with his latest adversity. Following the fight, McGregor posted:
I was so sharp and so ready for this fight I cannot believe what has happened. The talk of me being off while walking in to the fight is nonsense. I was calm, ready, and confident. I am in shock what has taken place. The devil is literally staring at me right in front of my face here. I am not engaging. I will be at church tomorrow.
I will overcome this.
I will not be deterred.
I will return.
