Where we last left off, Steve Lawson was announced to have been a faithful member of a local church who was repentant and reconciling with his wife, prior to the public. It was a gracious ending to a tragic situation. But on Sunday, Evangelical Dark Web received a tip that Steve Lawson was speaking at the Contending For The Faith Conference.
The Contending For The Faith Conference is a Black female pastor-led conference that has been held since 2013.
There is no confusing who was being described. Lawson was slated to speak in the workshops on sermon preparation.
The story would blow up on X but low and behold the website would be swiftly updated.
Lawson was swiftly removed and replaced with William Curtis.
What Happened?
There are three possibilities as to what happened. The first is that Steve Lawson was to speak as one of two White guys at a predominantly Black conference but upon public backlash, dropped out. This would be entirely within the Big Eva paradigm.
Another possibility is that this was a glitch in making the website. Whether ripping off a template that had real data in it or AI vibe coding a website for the conference, Steve Lawson was copied onto the 2026 conference. This option exonerates Lawson of wrongdoing and presents the Contending Conference as incompetent.
However, there is a lot of incompetence to accept this narrative. The Contending Conference would have had to change its template in 2026, several years into its operation, to something completely new. But this website has been live since, at the latest, the beginning of July. Lawson was prominently featured as a speaker, making this a hard error to ignore.
The most conspiratorial possibility is that the Contending Conference used Steve Lawson to drum up publicity and controversy and sell tickets. This is unbecoming of supposed pastors, but content over everything is a business model.
