Wells went out on a July 4 boat trip with friends to Horn Island. He disappeared. His body turned up two days later, face down in the water. No trauma. No signs anyone laid hands on him. The state medical examiner called cause and manner undetermined. An independent pathologist the family hired reached the same conclusion. Witnesses said he was up and talking after whatever happened earlier that day. Phone records showed activity on his device before and after he went missing. Nothing added up to a crime.
Ben Crump rolled in anyway. So did Bishop Donald Hilliard Jr., senior pastor of Cathedral International; Dr. Bernice King, daughter of woke communist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; Al Sharpton. The same attorney who turns every ambiguous Black death into a national production showed up to frame this as white kids killing a Black kid and getting away with it. He and the family pushed the homicide story hard. They leaned on race when the physical evidence and the witnesses would not cooperate. Local activists and the usual media outlets picked up the script and ran with demands for charges, cover-up talk, and the rest of the ritual.
The grand jury listened to the autopsies, the scene work, the phone data, and the testimony. They came back with the only honest reading available. No criminal conduct. No case to bring. The death stays what it always was, a tragedy on the water. It does not turn into a lynching because Crump needed the footage.
This was never an honest search for answers. It was a campaign to force a narrative that the evidence refused to support. Crump and the people amplifying him knew better or should have. They ran the play anyway. The grand jury just would not sign off on it.
