Ron DeSantis face

Ron DeSantis Made Florida So Red It Withstood Iran War

The 2026 midterms were a wipeout. Democrats took the House. They took the Senate. Trump’s people are already blaming Iran, gas, and whoever talked him into a war that was supposed to last four weeks and is still going in month eight, a subject of its own article. Florida, however, did not break.

Byron Donalds won the governorship by 1.4 points. Amendment 3 cleared 60 percent. Ashley Moody held the Senate seat. The state that Ron DeSantis spent eight years turning red absorbed a national repudiation that buried Republicans everywhere else. Donalds did not do that. The machine underneath him did.

The War Ate The Map

Trump launched the Iran war on February 28 with Israel. He said it would be over in “four weeks or so.” By Election Day the conflict had run more than eight months, and every piece of data the operatives will admit to in private says the same thing. The war, not the tariffs, is what lit the prices.

DeSantis said it before the votes were counted. The Iran war was a “big, big drag.” He said it was backfiring on the party. He was right. The rest of the country proved him right in one night.

Florida was supposed to feel it too, but Florida was the one anomaly on election night.

A 19-Point State Produced A 1-Point Governor

Donalds beat Jolly 50.1 to 48.7. That is 4,117,145 to 4,001,446. Libertarians and a pile of independents ate the rest. The Associated Press called it. He will be Florida’s first Black governor. He will also be the weakest Republican elected to that office in a generation.

Ron DeSantis won this job by 19.4 points in 2022. Rick Scott used to pad double digits. The last Democrat in the mansion was Buddy MacKay, and that was 1999. Republicans have held the place for 28 years. Donalds inherited that. He nearly dropped it.

He had every structural advantage a candidate can buy. Trump’s endorsement. More than $140 million raised, with spending north of $165 million by the end. The Democrats, in terms of spending power treated Florida as a nonpriority, while dumping real cash into seven other races. Jolly was outspent on a scale that should have produced a coronation. It produced a recount-adjacent margin in a state that is not supposed to be close.

Jolly’s concession in Tampa was the tell. He said 48 or 49 percent in a state where his own party has 29 percent of registered voters meant a coalition had arrived. He is not wrong about the math. He is wrong about what it proves. It proves Donalds could not convert a red state into a win large enough to look like a mandate. A former Republican with Gwen Graham on the ticket, no debates, and a fraction of the money still got within shouting distance of the mansion. That is not a rising Democratic majority. That is an underwhelming Republican nominee scraping over a bar DeSantis had already raised.

The prediction markets spent the year pricing Donalds as destiny. Kalshi and Polymarket sold him as a lock. The actual election result was that Donalds survived. This one won because Florida is Florida, not because Byron Donalds ran a race that deserved 50.1 percent.

DeSantis knew. He spent months refusing to hand Donalds the job. He called him unfit. He said it publicly. He said it to Trump. The late endorsement in September was a party hygiene move, not a conversion.

DeSantis and Amendment 3

DeSantis did not spend his last year as governor trying to make Byron Donalds look tall. He spent it on the homestead. It raises the non-school homestead exemption from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, then indexes it to inflation. It also cuts the annual assessment cap on non-homestead property in half, from 10 percent to 5. New arrivals have to live in Florida five years before they get the new exemption. It was initially unpopular, yet DeSantis poured his political capital here.

Local property tax collections went from $33 billion in 2019 to $62 billion now. Homestead is a minority of that pile, maybe 30 to 35 percent. Kill all of it, he said, and local government would still have more money than it had when he took office. Simpson said the quiet conservative sentence. Pay the house off and you still do not own it. Miss the tax bill long enough and the county does.

It passed with 62-38 percent. That is a supermajority scraped out of a state that still knows how to count. Amendment 1, the rainy-day raid, failed. Amendment 2, the farm equipment cut, failed. The one DeSantis actually worked passed.

Jolly opposed Amendment 3 and said he would respect the outcome. Donalds said he would vote yes. One of those men was governing. The other was borrowing the issue.

The State Is The Story

Take Donalds out of the night and Florida still looks like DeSantis country. Moody beat Angie Nixon, a democratic socialist with an Obama nod, in a Senate race the national press tried to make interesting. The Legislature was never in doubt. The amendment that local governments called apocalyptic cleared the 60-percent bar.

Donalds is what happens when the party then nominates a congressman who is long on MAGA fluency and short on the job. He raised a fortune. He avoided debates. He ran on affordability while the man leaving office was the one actually cutting the taxes. He won because the electorate DeSantis built would not vote for a party-switcher and a 29-percent registration base on the same night the country was punishing Republicans for a war in the Gulf. A 19-point governor produced a 1-point successor and still passed a homestead amendment his own Senate president tried to kill.

Iran doomed the midterms. Florida had already been built too red to fall with them. Byron Donalds got the office anyway. He should not confuse that with a mandate.
