Ray Orltund is an apologist and the father of the prominent Gavin Ortlund. Last year, he has made headlines for his endorsement of Kamala Harris. Now Ray Ortlund is weighing into the empathy debate, kicked off by Allie Stuckey and Joe Rigney with their respective books.
Ray Orlund posted this on Instagram.
“If empathy is a sin, sin boldly.”
The church sign comes from Judson Memorial Church, a notoriously liberal church that was an early adopter of homosexual affirmation in the 1980s. The New York church makes is clear on their pink website what they believe:
We welcome persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities (including cisgender, transgender, and genderqueer) to participate fully in the life and ministry of the church. We support each and every quest to construct one’s own identity, affirming any and all who identify as lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, questioning, polysexual, asexual, pansexual, omnisexual, and straight.
As an “Open and Affirming” UCC and “Welcoming and Affirming” American Baptist church: WELCOME!Â
Ray Ortlund also goes to a church that’s heterodox on homosexuality, as Immanuel Church in Nashville, Tennessee has Sam Allberry as a pastor who affirms homosexual identity and desires as nonsinful.
So, while it’s possible Ray Ortlund agreed with a gay affirming church unwittingly as they made a liberal argument concerning empathy, it’s just as likely Ortlund knowingly advertised a gay church’s signage.

Calling normal people the perjorative cisgender is a violation of the 9th commandment (8th for Lutherans and Papists). Way to have “empathy” guys. You made me cry calling me that slur.
