In a June 19, 2026, letter to U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr., addressed concerns over warnings issued to three San Francisco Giants pitchers for writing references to Genesis 9:12-16 on their rainbow-themed Pride Night caps. The incident, which occurred during a June 12 game against the Chicago Cubs at Oracle Park, sparked debates about religious expression, uniform rules, and perceived double standards in professional sports.
Pitchers Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker inscribed “Gen 9:12-16” on their caps. The verses describe the rainbow as God’s covenant with Noah after the flood: a symbol of promise not to destroy the earth by water again. A fourth player, Sam Hentges, opted not to wear the Pride-themed hat at all. MLB issued verbal warnings for violating uniform regulations prohibiting unauthorized writing or markings on apparel and equipment. No fines or further discipline were imposed.
On June 16, Sen. Hawley sent a letter demanding answers, accusing MLB of a “pattern of discrimination” against Christian players while promoting other social messages. He highlighted MLB’s 2020 actions supporting Black Lives Matter patches, mound stencils, and player cleat messages, actions that relaxed uniform rules for progressive causes. Hawley also referenced a prior incident involving a Washington Nationals executive (later fired) who admitted to excluding a Catholic player from promotions due to faith.
Hawley requested documents on the uniform policy, past enforcements, religious accommodation practices, Pride Night expectations, and approvals for prior political messaging. He tied the issue to MLB’s unique antitrust exemption, arguing it demands greater public accountability.
Josh Hawley touted the letter as the MLB commissioner writing to admit “they were wrong to threaten the Giants players over Bible verses and promises never to fine or discipline these players – or any players for their religious beliefs.”
What remains to be seen is whether the MLB is sincere or whether this will mark a turning point in their corporate culture. However, what is obvious to all is the selective enforcement. MLB actively promoted BLM messaging in 2020 but scrutinized Christian references to the rainbow’s biblical origin.
While Pride Month appears to have climaxed a few years ago, it does appear that the homosexual agenda is making a firm stand on sports because it is more culturally transgressive to everyday Americans.
