Yesterday’s column on The Gospel Coalition was worth revisiting in video form, while specifically addressing Steve Deace’s recent criticisms of discernment ministries. The Blaze Media commentator gave a thinly veiled critique of Protestia, referring to them as “hardcore cessationist Calvinists” who believe that anyone outside the John MacArthur style is not saved.
Steve Deace used this as a setup to contrast with Clear Truth Media. It’s worth noting that Steve Whitlow of Clear Truth Media did not join in on dunking on discernment ministries. This clip, along with other promotions of CTM prompted me to write on the foreseeable pitfalls and necessary tools for the success of creating a ministry that can outsize The Gospel Coalition.
Protestia is emerging as a platform for hyper-charismatic cringe videos as well as posting videos of Papists worshipping statues of Mary (but calling it veneration). Perhaps they’ve earned the reputation that Steve Deace presupposes that they have. But this reputation is more strawman than their actual position. I’m optimistic that Protestia and Steve Deace will reconcile rather than beef on social media.
Nevertheless, I want to reiterate that discernment ministries like Evangelical Dark Web, Protestia, and Disntr should be viewed as holding Christian media accountable. We report on what larger outlets largely neglect. We report on people as false teachers whereas outlets like Christian Post have an adversity to brutally honest reporting and Christianity Today is completely given over. Clear Truth Media is not embarking on an easy journey, much less a financially self-sufficient one. It’s going to be a lot of work to take down The Gospel Coalition.
