It was amid these struggles both real and alleged that it was leaked that Brett Cooper would leave the Daily Wire with speculation as to why. But in the end, this was a good deal for both sides, as Brett Cooper could make more money independently, and The Daily Wire could astroturf another talent. However, The Daily Wire’s ambition to astroturf Cooper’s former cohost or fill-in host, Reagan Conrad, to take over Cooper’s The Comment Section podcast has been a failure thus far.
Brett Cooper’s content typically involves discussing both political and non-political topics from a conservative standpoint, aiming to engage a Gen Z audience through platforms like YouTube and TikTok. She left The Daily Wire in December 2024, announcing her departure in a YouTube video where she clarified that she was not fired but decided to leave to pursue new challenges.
“The Comments Section with Brett Cooper” was a popular YouTube show where Cooper would comment on various news stories, social media comments, and cultural phenomena, often with a humorous and critical take from her conservative viewpoint. The show was one of The Daily Wire’s attempts to capture a younger audience. After Cooper’s departure, Reagan Conrad, who was her producer, took over as host. The transition was met with mixed reactions from fans, with some expressing reluctance to continue following the show without Cooper’s unique style and presence. The show’s viewership has reportedly decreased since the change in host.
As you can see, the new format is not successful thus far and with stories that have a broad appeal. As something of a YouTuber myself, I go by a 10% rule which is a bit of an industry standard, where a video is successful if the views equate to 10% of the subscribers. So in the case of The Comment Section, when Brett Cooper was hosting, she was getting 400000 views on 4 million subs. In contrast Reagan Conrad is getting 48000 on a good day. Forget 10%. She’s at 1%!
This is not even Reagan Conrad’s fault. She’s not expected to be as talented as Cooper, just cheaper. However, The Daily Wire set her up for failure by not creating a new channel. Instead, they killed a 4 million sub channel in the algorithms.
If channel subs are not watching the videos, no one else will be recommended to watch them, is a short explanation of how YouTube works. Not wanting their 4 million-sub asset to go to waste, the Daily Wire cut corners in Reagan Conrad’s astroturf which will ultimately doom this venture.
This is not the first time this has been done, as Blaze Media did the same when they rebranded Elijah Schaffer and Sidney Watson’s channel to Alex Stein’s podcast which has also been a colossal and degenerate failure.
