The October Surprise is a political phenomenon of late-breaking news intended to impact the results of an upcoming election. The JD Greear Unmasked documentary trailer is intended to function as such for next week’s Annual Southern Baptist Convention. The trailer is intended to generate buzz around the movie and the legacy of Greear as a whole. JD Greear is the megachurch pastor of Summit Church in North Carolina, and he served as president of the SBC from 2019-2021.
The Annual Southern Baptist Convention, this year, is a hard year to predict, as it will be a year where battles are reset by the persistent men laboring to save the denomination. The biggest buzz is around ending the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, the SBC’s lobbying arm that has long been a liberal cesspool.
Whether the fight to ban female pastors will be reignited has yet to be seen. Additionally, the race for president, as well as other officers, appears underwhelming. Clint Pressley is slated to be reelected president, and there is no serious campaign underway to challenge this.
The JD Greear trailer, however, could ignite the fight by sowing distrust in the SBC establishment that pushed such a wolf upon them. Thus this could be a small boost to efforts such as banning female pastors or floor motions.
