Back in 2016, Senator Ted Cruz was the rising star and the favored choice among evangelical voters. Among those who attended church weekly, he preferred him over Donald Trump. As history played out, Trump won the primary and became president, but Cruz has largely faded in political prominence. He does a podcast called Verdict, but he is hardly a favorite amongst conservatives, especially younger conservatives. On Covid, he was largely silent while rights were stripped away via executive fiat, and he initially supported the Ukraine War. It should be noted that the presence of defense contractors in Texas has benefited from the war. Yet the decline of Ted Cruz has extended even to his faith and understanding of doctrine. He was quick to decry the plight of Ugandan homosexuals under their criminalization law, calling such laws “an abomination.”
With the recent warring between Israel and Iran underway, all stops are being pulled out to involve America in the conflict. Currently, there are reports of nuclear enrichment occurring within the borders of Iran, leading to calls for intervention by the United States. All of this is reminiscent of Iraq in 2003, even down to the nuclear enrichment and the calls for regime change. President Trump has repeatedly touted that Iran cannot obtain nuclear weapons, but he has, for his entire political career, opposed Forever Wars like Iraq and Afghanistan, which Iran would doubtless become. Needless to say, the president’s messaging is conflicting, perhaps intentionally so as a matter of strategy. It should be noted that as Zionism dies in America, this is the last opportunity for them to drag America into another Middle Eastern conflict while there is still sizable support for such an act.
Thus, the recent clash between Senator Cruz and Tucker Carlson is a stark battlefield within the Republican coalition. Carlson is staunchly anti-war, while Cruz has touted the need for intervention, including regime change. Throughout the first half of the interview, Cruz is pressed on his perspective on the Iraq War and his perspective on the fall of Syria last year. Cruz’s ascendency amidst a wave of interventionist skepticism allows him to claim to be against the Iraq War post-facto, but he was also against toppling Assad when Obama was president, reasoning that a worse regime would arise in its stead. With Carlson, he appeared ambivalent about the post-Assad Syria, as he had previously touted it as a defeat for Israel’s enemies. Thus, he views foreign policy through the lens of Israel.
Regarding AIPAC, he assures Carlson that it is not a foreign lobby, but just a lobby that desires a good relationship between Israel and America, but not in coordination, of course. Dual citizenship questions aside, the pro-Israeli lobby is loyal to the interests of a foreign nation, which one might call treasonous. Cruz ultimately implies that Carlson is antisemitic for posing the question.

One of the viral clips from the interview was an exchange on Cruz’s theology of Israel, which is the basis for his support.
You suggested that it was a strange thing that I said a minute ago that when I came into the Senate, I resolved that I was going to be the leading defender of Israel. And what you didn’t ask was why.

Carlson then asks, “Those who bless the government of Israel?” to which Cruz then said:

Carlson quizzes him on where the verse is found, to which Cruz is unable to cite Genesis 12:3. Cruz argues that this verse commands his support for Israel. Carlson follows up by asking if that is referring to the current borders or leadership, to which Cruz affirms, stating that Israel has existed for “thousands of years. Now there was a time when it didn’t exist, and then it was recreated just over seventy years ago.”
Cruz would go on to say that the verse does not apply to Jews globally, but to Israel, which is strictly the nation-state within the Middle East. Normally, dispensationalists would apply this verse to Jews in general, not exclusively Israel as a modern nation-state, which he anachronistically claimed is the same as that depicted in the Bible. This is found in the rhetoric of “God’s chosen people” regarding the Jews, which extends beyond the modern nation of Israel to Jews in America.
If the promise given in Genesis 12 is applicable to either the Jews or modern Israel, then the onus is on the dispensationalist to argue how America has been blessed by blessing Israel. Rather, America has seen a moral decline since 1948, often perpetuated by American Jews. At the same time, Zionists provoked needless interventionism in the Middle East, which desecrated Christianity to the tune of trillions of dollars and a loss of global hegemony. Apart from the technological improvements, America has hardly been blessed but is instead experiencing decline and destabilization.
Scripture and Church History are unambiguous that the Church is the true Israel, a debate Tucker Carlson alludes but he does not challenge Cruz’s interpretation. Regarding the claim of sovereignty, Genesis 49:10 reads, “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.” Shiloh is unambiguously Christ, prophesied to come through the line of Judah, but the scepter represents sovereignty as a people. Whether through kings, elders, or judges, Judah would exhibit varying degrees of sovereignty from Jacob until the first century AD and was the predominant tribe of Israel after Genesis. They would even outlast the other tribes, which were diluted and often lumped under Judah, from which the word Jew is derived. If the scepter is sovereignty and Christ is their sovereign, then apart from Christ, their king, they have no divine claim of a scepter.
Cruz’s second reason is that they are America’s most valuable ally, to which he cites their strikes against Iran as preventing America’s enemy from becoming a nuclear power. This is circular reasoning because the only reason Iran is an enemy of America is because of American support for Israel. Assuming the intelligence is accurate, Iran seeks a bomb to prevent regime change from being forced upon it, like North Korea. Despite all the rhetoric, Israel has not launched nuclear weapons against Iran despite rhetorical claims of existential proportion. Regardless of what an 86-year-old Ayatollah says, Iran would not realistically use nuclear weapons if it had the capabilities, but rather as a deterrence against interventionism, just like every other nation with nuclear weapons.
If America were not aligned with Israel, then there would be little basis for hostilities with Iran. America’s only geopolitical interests in the region are the flow of oil and the security of trade routes. The Houthis that are attacking the freight only persist because of Zionism, thus rendering Israel a geopolitical liability. Furthermore, Israel and Iran pose as a distraction at a time when America should be repositioning itself against China, and this requires moving attention away from the Middle East.
Conclusion
The interview between Tucker Carlson and Ted Cruz represents an inflection point on the American right at a time when all efforts are being made to lobby Trump to intervene against Iran. Cruz often resorts to tacitly calling Carlson an antisemite, an isolationist, and a Putin apologist while objecting to being called a neoconservative when advocating neoconservatism. Cruz further fails to examine the failures of Syria and Iraq, both of which fueled by Israel, which would be repeated in Iran a nation of 92 million—something Senator Cruz does not even care to know. Instead, Cruz hubristically thinks that there are millions of Iranians yearning for democracy…just like Iraq.

Note that the Old testament signaled Judah (and perhaps the other tribes that were with her) to the land in Books like Ezra and Nehemiah. (they are not Jews per say, even if their lineage is of Abraham through Isaac, and might still potentially reference the Torah in their beliefs)

If you looked at 11-12 of Romans 11:
“11 I ask, then, have they stumbled so as to fall? Absolutely not! On the contrary, by their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel jealous. 12 Now if their transgression brings riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fullness bring!”
Reserved for himself, those who had not already bowed the knee to Baal. Think about that. He reserved them, because they had not bowed the knee to Baal. That sounds like chosen because of actions, rather than predestination, I say this not to start a firestorm argument on it, but to clarify what Paul is saying before continuing.
Christians should not boast as if we are somehow better than Israel, or that Israel ‘ethnically’ is no longer God’s chosen according to this verse. This also implies, that God is not done with Israel as a people.

(15’s wording is a little weird. the older KJV says: “15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?”
The NKJV has it as: “15 For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?”
He also points at the first fruits being holy (holy means set apart, set part for whom to what? for God’s design, This implies that the tree of Israel is set apart as intended by God’s Design.
Continuing into Verse 17-24 CSB
“17 Now if some of the branches were broken off, and you, though a wild olive branch [the wild branch is the Gentiles], were grafted in among them and have come to share in the rich root of the cultivated olive tree, 18 do not boast that you are better than those branches. But if you do boast—you do not sustain the root, but the root sustains you.
19 Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 True enough; they were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but beware, 21 because if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.
22 Therefore, consider God’s kindness and severity: severity toward those who have fallen but God’s kindness toward you—if you remain in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. 23 And even they, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, because God has the power to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut off from your native wild olive tree and against nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these—the natural branches—be grafted into their own olive tree?

What a marvelous saying?

Clearly God not only has the power to restore branches to the tree that were cut off earlier, it implies God is not done with ethnic Israel which is at the root of that tree, which has salvation.
Continuing at verse 25:
“25 I don’t want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you will not be conceited: A partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written,
The Deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
27 And this will be my covenant with them
when I take away their sins.
28 Regarding the gospel, they are enemies for your advantage, but regarding election, they are loved because of the patriarchs, 29 since God’s gracious gifts and calling are irrevocable. 30 As you once disobeyed God but now have received mercy through their disobedience, 31 so they too have now disobeyed, resulting in mercy to you, so that they also may now receive mercy. 32 For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that he may have mercy on all.”
That verse section 26-27 is undeniable? Clearly, God has a future for Jacob.
So this Spiritual Nonsense that Israel is only the Church now has thus been refuted by Paul in Romans.
Someone likely will bring up Jeremiah 31:31-36 CSB
“31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
35 Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The Lord of hosts is his name:
36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.”
Considering this passage is given to a remnant returned to the land, most would conclude this is given to the post babylonic exile returnees. Those informed by the New Testament know this new covenant is the same one The Lord Jesus Christ HIMSELF was teaching. IE, that this new Covenant is the promise of the Church which at that point was a mystery to come. There is also a bit of a suggestion here that some of this prophecy is perhaps even still pointing to the Future return of the King at the end. I’m not really intersted in the Eschatology implications there, except to point out, that when you combine these two passages Romans 11 with jeramiah 31, there is one profound conclusion, that God’s plan of Salvation was given to Israel initially, but was only a shadow of the ultimate Covenant that God is bringing through Christ in the New Testament (and possibly at the end times).
Verses 35 and 36 may seem baffling to some. At first read you might think he’s talking about Israel not keeping the Law, But the citation of the moon and stars is not just God giving his credentials I think. He might be talking about the ordinances that were the Feast days and high Holy days. There is still some detail not clear to me there, what keeping those ordinances means to fullfill this, but Jeremiah’s prophecy continues it doesn’t end there, Instead if one continuied to read they would find that God is talking about a future time indicated as such:
Jer 31:37-40
“37 Thus saith the Lord; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the Lord.
38 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the city shall be built to the Lord from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner.
39 And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath.
40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the Lord; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.”
God declares that there will come a point in Israel where the valley of dead bodies, of ashes, and fields in the area specified would no more be plucked nor thrown down implying I think no more judgement or war brought to Israel’s gates at Jerusalem. Given current world events, its hard to suggest this time has come yet.
Now, getting back to Cruz. Yes he didn’t remember where the scripture was, frankly there are MULTIPLE places in the OT where Israel is told about Blessings and Cursings, Carlson thought it was Gen 16 and I’m not going to look it up, because it is there if someone wants to use a bible app to look it up. I don’t fault him for not knowing it. Thousands of Christians might struggle to give an exact verse citation on this one, its not lack of knowledge, remember that markings for chapter and verse were added much later and are not inspired.
What is worthy of pointing out as Carlson tried to do, was how far does that desire to protect Israel extend, and does it do so over and above what might be better for our own nation. (Tucker pointed out about the Nordstream pipeline that not having good Natural Gas pipeline actually harmed German businesses and economics.)
Now I won’t deny that there have been some terrible things done by people of Jewish Decent. I’m not here to argue about their sins past or present. But you brought up that This threat from Iran and our Support of Israel is circular. (It isn’t just Iran that this support is against, the nation of Israel today is surrounded by mostly Muslim nations. Those who understand Geography acknowledge this without dispute.) There is more to Iran’s hate of the US than just Israeli support. It goes back to times before you were born, before even I was born.
After WWII for a few years Iran had a democracy, and the oil was controlled by what is now BP. Iran objected to another nation having control over it, as we would if another nation took over MIcrosoft or Google. So in 1953, US and UK Intelligence assets decided to orchestrate a coup, overthrowing the duly elected Prime Minister and installing the Shah. This would clearly be seen as a betrayal by the US and UK to the Iranians. The Shah became as dictatorial as Any dictator we could cited in history sense. But with the western support, the Shah did modernize Iran to a degree, but he was seen as a puppet, and Iranians grew angry (clearly wanted self rule), the Shah’s regime was Oppressive, and it was you might say inevitible that the piper would be paid.
IN 1979 the Islamic Revoltion when the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, exiled by the Shah, returned to massive support., overhtrew the Shah and established an Islamic republic. This was explicitly anti-American, as because of America’s support of the Shah’s tyranny they naturally blamed us also. Shortly thereafter came the Iran Hostage Crisis, then you had a squence of events, The Iran Iraq war of 80-88, the Iran-Contra affai, were just one misstep after another by the US, frankly. 9/11 happens and they are added to the ‘Axis of Evil’. So you see this isn’t just about Israel at all.
It’s revisiionst history to conclude this is only because of the State of Israel. so I think Cruz tried to unbox more recent history, to the degree that Tucker would let him go on. Cruz would point out the naivete of suggesting that. ‘The Houthis that are attacking the freight only persist because of Zionism, thus rendering Israel a geopolitical liability.’ That overly simplifies all that is going on in the Middle East frankly.
I don’t think this is an inflection point at all. I think its good that Crus got some hard questions from Tucker, and for the most Part Cruz answered them as best he could. He didn’t answer everything, but the convesation’s momentum did not allow it to go back to some of the issues that were left unaddressed. Social media pundits that want to ‘keep score’ are giddy because Carlson allgedly made Cruz look silly. A full view of the 2 hour interview, would show that is a simpletons evaluation of only clipps taken from it, out of context, and without understanding.
I would say its wrong to suggest that Cruz has not thought about the failures in Syria or Iraq, he clearly has. He did so With Ukraine after all. The issue is that He was not going to bear it all out in this interview as those events in the past, and all we can do is see what History has in store in both cases. Now a lot of people, would hear the fact of Cruz not having population statistics of Iran memorized, or its ethnic make up. And conclude Cruz is not serious as Tucker suggests. I don’t think everyone comes at issues of military force from the same analytical system Tucker Carlson is using. This is a tangent point in the conversation, frankly. Your jump to suggesting this is Cruz’s Zionism at work. Nothing in that interview Establishes Cruz as a Zionist. This is a leap of logic without detail filled in. Your need to scratch your Anti-Zionist itch as if it is the most important part of the Equation in this issue belies a lazy political and Journalistic ideology which like Cruz maybe not knowing CIA Fact book knowledge of Iran from memory, are really not advancing the discussion in any conclusive direction.
