Alistair Begg Plays Victim On Gay Wedding Compromise

Last year, Evangelical Dark Web broke the story of Alistair Begg giving sinful advice to a grandmother to attend a gay wedding and bring a gift. This story instantly blew up and led to Begg getting canceled from ShepCon, a radio ministry, and losing much of his credibility.

Now, Alistair Begg has done a soft-ball interview for Expositors Collective, a small YouTube channel with barely 1000 subs. Expositor’s Collective put out an 8-minute clip with auto-captions to promote their interview, highlighting Begg’s position and response to the gay wedding scandal. Begg would play the victim, asserting that all hell broke loose the moment he tried to show compassion.

Begg retold the story of how he counseled a grandmother to attend a lesbian wedding, made worse because the granddaughter was also a transvestite. He stated that the grandmother would catch her off guard by attending the wedding, disavowing the assumption that her beliefs would cause her not to attend.

Begg’s error, of course, is that he is counseling a grandmother to give tacit approval by her presence at a gay wedding. The granddaughter would most likely assume that the grandmother’s convictions have changed, because she would have correctly assumed that a person who opposed gay marriage would not attend a gay wedding, an event that celebrates what God calls abominable.

“Some enterprising soul found it, and in his basement, with a microphone and a cell phone, he- and I don’t know who this person is. I haven’t a clue. The headline he created was ‘Alistair Begg endorses gay marriage. So that’s what then went out on social media: Begg endorses gay marriage.”

This was met with crowd reaction and sympathy. However, Alistair Begg is lying here. This initial video was published at 7 am on January 24, 2024, and went viral by the time I woke up for the exact reason of the headline: Alistiar Begg Compromises On Gay Weddings. There isn’t a YouTube video I could find with the headline Begg fabricates as the origin story of the scandal. The basement is either a reference to Evangelical Dark Web’s founder, Ray Fava, or Protestia’s David Morrill.

Begg furhter laments that his colleagues denouced his views on podcasts without “picking up the phone.” This, too, is playing the victim, as Begg’s public teaching necessitated public rebuke. If his views were a rumor or private sin, it would be a different matter.

Begg concludes by framing the issue as compassion. In the Bible, none of the instances where Jesus shows compassion does he even come close to endorsing sin. Feeding five thousand is compassion. Eating cake and bringing lesbians a toaster so that they can get a jump start on living a life of sin together is not compassion. Most understand this.
