Mike Huckabee Defies President Trump To Defend Israel Attack In Qatar

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has publicly defended Israel’s recent missile strike in Doha, Qatar, framing it as a targeted operation rather than an outright attack on the Gulf nation. This stance, however, directly contrasts with President Donald Trump’s criticism of the action, highlighting Huckabee’s loyalty to Israel above the United States.

The incident in question occurred on September 9, 2025, when Israel launched a missile strike in Doha targeting a senior Hamas operative allegedly responsible for attacks on Israelis. The operation resulted in the death of the intended target, along with two civilians, and injured five others. Qatar swiftly condemned the strike as “state terrorism,” leading to a suspension of its mediation role in Gaza ceasefire negotiations.

The event has strained relations in the region, particularly given Qatar’s role as a key US ally hosting the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American military facility in the Middle East. Ambassador Huckabee addressed the controversy in a video statement and interviews, emphasizing semantic distinctions to downplay the operation’s implications. “Israel did not attack Qatar,” Huckabee stated. “They just sent a missile into their country aimed at one person.”

He acknowledged the collateral damage, noting, “Unfortunately, there were some people who were near that missile strike that were injured or killed from it.” Huckabee drew parallels to the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011, arguing that no apology was demanded from the US despite the operation occurring on sovereign Pakistani soil without prior notification. He urged against applying a double standard to Israel, saying, “Don’t impose one standard on Israel and another on other countries.”

Huckabee’s comments have sparked widespread online backlash and mockery, with critics accusing him of linguistic gymnastics to justify the strike.

In stark contrast, President Trump has openly criticized the strike, describing it as “unfortunate” and asserting that it “does not advance Israel or America’s goals.” Speaking to reporters, Trump expressed being “very unhappy about every aspect” of the operation and “not thrilled” with its execution. He clarified that the decision was made independently by Netanyahu without US involvement, emphasizing, “I view Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the US, and feel very badly about the location of the attack.”

In a bold move to reassure Qatar, Trump signed an executive order on September 29, declaring that any future armed attacks on Qatar would be treated as a direct threat to US peace and security in the region. The White House also reportedly pressured Israel to issue an apology to Qatar, which Israeli officials expressed regret over while maintaining the strike’s necessity.

This divergence raises questions about internal cohesion in the Trump administration’s Middle East strategy. Huckabee’s defense aligns closely with Israel’s narrative of self-defense against terrorism, particularly amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict that has seen sporadic ceasefires and renewed hostilities.

Trump’s rebuke, however, underscores a prioritization of US alliances in the Gulf, where Qatar plays a pivotal role in hosting US forces and mediating regional disputes. Reports suggest a heated phone call between Trump and Netanyahu following the strike, indicating potential strains in the historically close US-Israel relationship.

As the dust settles, the episode tests Trump’s “America First” doctrine, balancing unwavering support for Israel with strategic partnerships in the Arab world. With Qatar resuming limited mediation efforts post-apology, the long-term impact on Gaza talks remains uncertain.

For now, Huckabee’s outspoken defense against his superior’s position underscores the complex, often conflicting priorities in US foreign policy.
