In this video, we see Hillsong’s promotional video for their 2019 Christmas special in London. By no means could one gather from this that a church is putting on this concert. The promo features mediocre secular Christmas music and effeminate males. Salt and Light does an excellent job of counting what is in the video, and points out what is conspicuously absent: Jesus. So, in a Christmas special, instead of any allusions to the true meaning of Christmas, we get a show that seems devoid of any salt. We see a massive, perhaps pagan celebration of Christmas.
“If you use carnal means to attract men, you’re going to attract carnal men. And you’re going to have to use greater carnal means to keep them in the church. So what has happened is this – we have these large churches filled with many unconverted carnal people. But, in those churches, we also have this small group of people that honestly want Christ… all they want is Jesus. But the pastor, in order to keep this larger group of unconverted people, he caters to them; so, while he is feeding these carnal men and women with carnal things, he is letting the sheep of God starve to death. The leadership is catering to the carnal and letting the Bride of Christ starve to death impoverished. That is wrong, and there is going to be judgment for it.” Paul Washer
While Hillsong and Brian Houston are known for the Prosperity Gospel, they are also pioneers of the Popularity Gospel. In this grand performance we see the Popularity Gospel in action. They are trying to put on a show, rather than trying to spread the Gospel. They want to put on a performance that will be liked by the masses, the masses who have lived lives rejecting God. The great failure of the Popularity Gospel is the ecclesiastical view that marketing should drive growth rather than the Holy Spirit. In the end there will be a lot of attendants that do not know Jesus and a good chance this will not lead them any closer to knowing Jesus, as opposed to creating an atmosphere where they can feel spiritual while living unrepentant in their sins.
