Joe Biden took the stage the first and perhaps only presidential debate of this election cycle. But in that moment, the debate was lost. Much speculation was made about whether and how the Whitehouse apothecaries would enhance Biden’s cognitive abilities to go toe to toe with his rival. But before he spoke a word, his feeble walk in which he approached his podium was enough to signal doom for his performance.
A few words were muttered barely audible on the microphone which might have raised more confidence issues, but once he spoke as though a rambling senile man on fast-forward, it was clear to all that Biden had lost the debate by virtue of how he showed up.
Arguably this was Donald Trump’s best debate performance to date. And despite his pro-abortion stance and numerous question dodges typical of any politician, Trump’s smirk while Biden talked was far more potent than any interruption that characterized his 2020 debates. Trump spoke slowly and deliberately and Biden spoke too fast and with not enough inflection. He had multiple dementia moments that Trump capitalized on for excellent soundbites.

There is talk that the Democrats will jettison Joe Biden, but I think not enough of their partisans care enough or have the political will to risk opposing Biden. Perhaps that’s a debate for another time.
