In a bid to boost its streaming service with a loyal audience, Amazon has retained the exclusive US streaming and theatrical distribution rights for Dallas Jenkin’s The Chosen series.
For Jenkin’s and The Chosen, this represents a heightened relationship with Amazon, as they were already available through the streaming service while having Jonathan and Jesus as a “behind the scenes” spinoff. This deal applies to all future seasons of The Chosen with a spinoff The Chosen in the Wild With Bear Grylls to be included in this package deal. The Bear Grylls spinoff will be like his other programs only that he will be with the cast members of The Chosen and placing them in wilderness situations.
Analysis
For Amazon, this represents a relatively cost-effective way to improve streaming numbers, sell advertising, and retain an audience. The Chosen is a good addition to their portfolio that likely comes at a fraction of the price as their expensive, largely unwatched content like The Rings of Power that they have spent over $1 billion on. The inclusion of the theatrical rights represents further upside as they would be entitled to a portion of the box office revenues. When their most popular and most impactful content is shows like Grand Tour and Clarkson’s Farm, Amazon is acquiring a low-risk solution to their lack of titles as the streaming services consolidate.
For The Chosen, this is a “sell high” transaction and a favorable deal overall. Whereas before, Dallas Jenkins was partnered with Angel Studios, which lacks a comprehensive distribution strategy, and subsequently, Lionsgate, Amazon Studios would take over distribution rights for both the theatrical release and streaming, offloading a major infrastructural deficiency onto Big Tech. The reason it is a “sell high” is because the quality of a TV show tends to decline over time. With season five forthcoming, and three more seasons promised, few if any dramas have sustained success with eight seasons, less so in the era of streaming. The Chosen is hardly premier television, neither being immersive like HBO’s Rome while liberally taking artistic liberties and writing many modern dynamics into the episodic format.
With all the scandals The Chosen has undergone, with gay pride flags on set and increasing liberties taken with Christ’s portrayal, it is likely that after eight seasons, they will erode even the core audience that has remained loyal after all the scandals. Overall, this is the best deal Dallas Jenkins could have gotten to maximize The Chosen’s brand
