At the beginning of September, Mercy in the Wilderness: How I Fell & What I Found was published by the curious author, Dr. Steven Lawson. Social media immediately speculated about whether the work was authentic or part of an AI scam on Amazon.

If only ebook, that would be more suspicious, but this seems like an old author unfamiliar with the industry changes.

But God Press is listed as the publisher, even with a logo. This publisher is not actually real, or is extremely private.

There’s a dedication to Beverly and Terry Warren. It names Caleb Faires for cover design. These are verifiable names. Faires is a verifiable graphic designer, even if the cover design looks AI.

Having skimmed the sample, it seems legit, like any other Big Eva self-help book. Maybe AI was used, but it was at Lawson’s behest. Otherwise, having never read Lawson, it’s in line with any other book written for Christians. So it having been ghostwritten is a possibility, but the lack of an ebook is an odd oversight.

One account verifies the book and provides an endorsement, albeit not the most convincing one.

It’s more likely than not that the book is authentically published by Steve Lawson. None of this weighs the merits of Lawson writing a book on this in the first place. Whether Lawson should not seek public life, write after his scandal, or that he should be free to impart hard-learned wisdom to people is a debate being had. Steve Lawson tested the waters of a public return to no avail over the summer, but it would seem that this book was in the works even before that. The return of Steve Lawson was inevitable, despite reports of him repenting in obscurity.
