Last week, the Rio Grande PResbytery announced a suspension of Zachary Garris over sarcastic tweets in an interaction with Anthony Bradley from 2023. There is apparently no statute of limitations on mean tweets, but further details have come out about the “trial” and shows that the process used to remove a pastor from ministry was even more unbiblical than previously thought.
According to Sean McGowan, a reliable insider to the situation:
To clarify regarding the tweet below:
1) RGP did not admit any evidence on Charge 2:
That means they didn’t admit the evidence of the tweet which would have provided the context of Garris’ interaction with Bradley.
2) RGP didn’t call on anyone to testify on Charge 2:
They didn’t even call on Anthony Bradley to testify about the interaction.
3) RGP deprived Garris of the opportunity to mount a defense against Charge 2.
They convicted him solely on what the indictment said under Charge 2.
And then moved to indefinitely suspend him.
So not only did the Rio Grande Presbytery fail to meet the 2-3 witness standard laid out in Scripture for bringing a charge against an elder, they also failed basic evidentiary procedure and did not allow a defense against the specific charge they suspended Garris over. This is an embarrassment to the entire Presbytery process. In contrast, the PA failed to discipline gay pastor Greg Johnson, who hosted the first Revoice conference.
Reenter Kevin DeYoung
Zachary Garris is a threat to liberalism, but such reformers are not welcomed in the PCA. At last years’s General Assembly, Kevin DeYoung as moderator, woke scolded a man for asking a question about Irwin Ince and the Black’s only church events he was a part of. He was chided to be more temperate, despite being extremely respectful in his talking.
The Rot Within
The Kellerites of the Rio Grande Presbytery are indicative of a much greater rot throughout the PCA. Their effeminate leadership has opened the floodgates of compromise on their laity. According to the Pew Research Center, 53% of PCA members support gay marriage. To make this matter even more severe, the number is up 13% from 2014. So, Side B Theology had major consequences on the laity.
However, when reformers like Zachary Garris buck feminism and Critical Race Theory, the presbytery is weaponized against him and a local church is harmed in the process.
