Russell Brand: Christ Chooses Us

Since January, Russell Brand’s conversion to Christianity has represented the biggest high-profile conversion this year. This is not to suggest that his actions have been without scrutiny, as he did exhibit tarot cards, but for the most part, he has demonstrated an in-depth understanding of Christian teaching, particularly on repentance. This should come across as a positive sign, that even though there are years of New Age practices that must be deprogrammed, Sanctification is a process.

Recently, Brand was featured during Tucker Carlson’s ongoing tour in which Carlson fills arenas and holds conversations with interesting guests. His upcoming shows include guests like Robert F Kennedy Jr, JD Vance (in Hershey, PA), and Alex Jones, to name a few. Brand’s comments were made during a show in Phoenix, AZ on September 4th.

Dressed rather casually and barefoot, Brand said the following:

Christ chooses us. I wish I had known earlier. I wish I hadn’t thought that I was too clever for the religion of my grandmothers. Well, I thought that I was too smart. I thought somehow that I knew what was in the Bible, even without reading it. Reading it, it’s blowing my mind on a daily basis. I can’t believe the profundity, the depth, the incredible beauty, the deep truth available to all of us. And I know there are many ways of receiving the Lord’s Truth and the Lord’s wisdom like it’s transforming me very quickly. I didn’t make a choice. Tucker and I have mentioned the way that you operate as well that there is a kind of surrender. I’m not saying that I am without shame. I’m not saying that I’m without fear. I’m not saying that a point, so I don’t feel compromised and uncertain. I’m saying that since being baptized, since becoming Christian, since surrendering to him, I feel his presence continually. I feel it now. I feel it in this moment. And I feel free.

Attesting to the change that reading Scripture has had on his life, Brand reveals his own vulnerabilities while also giving insight into his prior belief that the Bible and Christianity were obsolete due to his own intelligence. This is a similar story that occurs within formerly Christian youths who get carried away by belief in evolution, the belief that biblical morals are antiquated, or some other cultural storm. The rising belief in New Age religions and the occult have more subtle origins in America through practices like Yoga, Ouija boards, or certain types of meditation that make light of the spiritual roots. In reading the Bible, Brand declares the profundity that he once rejected.

More importantly, he does not take credit for his salvation, instead claiming “Christ chooses us” demonstrating soteriological wisdom. For someone coming from the New Age spiritualism, which is very self-determinative, this reflects a major shift in his thought process. He is not declaring that he has sought God, but that he would never have sought God on his own. This might make him the best type of Christian—that is, a Calvinist.

May Russell Brand continue the race and finish strong!

  1. This is good news. He seems to be showing genuine fruit of the spirit, unlike Kanye West. The other shoe could still drop, but I pray for him to be a real brother in Christ.

  2. Russell Brand was recently baptized into the Roman Catholic Church. He has embraced many Christian and Catholic beliefs, and his wife is also Catholic. I don’t know that I would call him a ‘brother in Christ.’
