Josh Howerton Gets Based On Voting

Josh Howerton has definitely shifted in the last year or so. The egalitarian multicampus megachurch pastor of Lakepointe Church, in the Dallas Fort Worth area, has had controversy come after him over his sermon illustrations offending feminists. But in a move that is sure to enrage liberals, Josh Howerton preached on voting in a way that, in context, is a tacit endorsement of Donald Trump for President.

Josh Howerton talks about sphere sovereignty and denies neutrality stating that if godly people do not fill power vacuums, the unrighteous will.

He talks about voting not being a message that you send but a decision that you make, arguing that whatever message you send, by not voting or voting third party, no one is going to receive it. He’s essentially calling this an empty virtue signal. Josh Howerton urges Christians to vote based on policy, not personality, race, or gender. In a broader context, many used “mean tweets” as a reason to not vote Trump in 2020 which became a meme in 2021 where bad outcomes were chided with a sardonic celebration of “no more mean tweets.” Josh Howerton was clearly implying that it was okay to vote for Trump and to not feel bad about it.

Addressing character, Howerton states that both candidates are incredibly flawed, morally. He ultimately says that Jesus is not on the ballot and that we do not demand this level of perfection with any other decision that we make, using the self-effacing example of attending his imperfect church. Josh Howerton frames voting as choosing the best available option, starkly contrasting to the pessimistic “lesser of two evils.”

Josh Howerton states that there are three kinds of leaders: Josiahs, Ahabs/Jezebels, and Jehus. In 2 Kings 9, Jehu is anointed and given a task to organize a coup against the house of Ahab. Jehu openly used treachery to accomplish his mission and was rewarded by God for it. However, Jehu was not a believer.

Josh Howerton says not to treat Jehus like Josiahs and emphatically states that Jehus are better than Jezebels. The implication is that Donald Trump is Jehu and Kamala Harris is Jezebel. This might be the best biblical metaphor for Donald Trump to date, especially when he’s compared to David, Saul, and John the Baptist. The woke-ish preacher has come a long way perhaps, with this based moment.
