Jimmy Carter Dead At 100. Should Christians Eulogize Him?

America’s 39th President Jimmy Carter died on Sunday at the age of 100 leaving behind a reputation of being a good person but a bad President. In many circles Jimmy Carter is seen as a Christian, being that he was famously Baptist, yet even the faith of Jimmy Carter is an exaggeration of his life and legacy.

Carter’s reputation as a Christian Democrat gives the impression that he opposed homosexuality, abortion, and the modern direction of the Democrat Party. But none of this was the case. As a Baptist, Jimmy Carter was firmly in the liberal, egalitarian camp during the 1980s, which makes him more honest about his views than Southern Baptists today, but this is in no way a virtue.

As a President, his weakness and incompetencies are rightly viewed as vices to his character.

Jimmy Carter’s presidency, which lasted from January 20, 1977, to January 20, 1981, was a disaster. There are several reasons for this assessment:

  1. Economic Stagnation: During Carter’s tenure, the United States experienced a period of stagflation, a combination of high inflation and low economic growth. Unemployment rates remained high, and the economy struggled to recover from the 1973-1974 recession.

  2. Energy Crisis: Carter’s presidency was marked by an energy crisis, with skyrocketing oil prices and long lines at gas stations. His administration’s response to the crisis, including price controls and a failed attempt to negotiate with foreign oil producers, was seen as ineffective.

  3. Foreign Policy Failures: Carter’s foreign policy was hampered by a number of significant events and challenges. The fall of the Shah of Iran and the resulting hostage crisis strained U.S.-Iranian relations and damaged Carter’s approval ratings. His inability to effectively respond to the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 also undermined his credibility as a foreign policy leader. And who could forget losing the Panama Canal, and the disaster it has been for relinquishing American control?

In short, Jimmy Carter was not a Christian and was no different than other Democrats. He just rehabbed his reputation better and grew old.

  1. Carter was a scumbag, but at least he was more-or-less open about his liberal beliefs.

The wolves-in-sheeps’-clothing who call themselves “conservative” and “Christian” while manipulatively twisting, corrupting, and re-defining “Christianity” and “conservatism” to mean cultural marxism, are far more dangerous.

The enemies and traitors within Christianity and conservatism are a million times more dangerous and subversive than the liberals outside.

  2. Just because Carter eventually supported same -sex marriage (which he really should not have done) does not mean he was not saved. St. Paul rebuked the Corinthian Christians for approving a particularly nasty (and then socially unacceptable) sort of incest, but he still saw them as brothers in Christ. It’s always possible that no one ever rebuked Carter about it and gave the right arguments about it.
