The wickedness of the Presbyterian Church USA has reached a new low, as the denomination is debating whether monogamous sexual relationships are mandatory or optional. The rule, submitted by the Sierra Blanca Presbytery, attempts to compel elders to refrain from having multiple sexual partners, not specifying opposite-sex relationships or within marriage.
Direct the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly to add the following authoritative interpretation to the Book of Order to be placed after G-2.0503a(3): [(4) Display moral character in all personal relationships by loving all neighbors without exception; refraining from gossip or strife; exhibiting patience; extending grace; serving as agents of God’s reconciliation in the world; and, if engaged in any relationship of a sexual nature, living in a monogamous one.]
The overture, seen as advancing Reconquista by YouTuber Redeemed Zoomer, is not without pushback.
Three committees within the Presbyterian Church (USA) are opposing a proposed amendment that would require ordained clergy in sexual relationships to be monogamous. The Advocacy Committee on LGBTQIA+ Equity criticized the proposal for promoting a “narrow, culturally specific understanding” of relationships and family. Meanwhile, the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy urged the denomination to focus instead on developing a broader theological framework for sexuality and gender.
The Advocacy Committee for Women and Gender Justice argued that the church should not regulate private relationship structures, warning that such policies could cause harm and reinforce “shame, silence, and spiritual coercion.” The sodomy-affirming group, More Light Presbyterians, also condemned the proposal, calling it “a step backward” that could further marginalize queer people.
If the loud, blue-haired voices are any indication, this is an uphill battle. Last year, the PCUSA passed an overture banning the support of discrimination against homosexuals among its pastoral candidates, eliminating any chances of reclaiming the once prominent denomination.
