Dusty Deever is a prominent Southern Baptist pastor who announced his candidacy for State Senate in Oklahoma in August in which he would run for a vacant seat in a special election. Deevers has been very active in the fight against abortion and a vocal supporter of Christian Nationalism. He ran an overtly Christian campaign that sought to end abortion in Oklahoma.
Despite these credentials, Bart Barber the liberal president of the Southern Baptist Convention, donated to a pro-abortion Branch Covidian doctor in order to spite his Baptist rival in the primary election. Bart Barber’s public comments would be used by the Democrat general election opponent Larry Bush to oppose Deevers.
The results are in for the general election. Dusty Deevers won by over 10 points. The margin of victory for Deevers was in line with the 2018 general election results for District 32 in which a nonincumbent Republican won. John Montgomery would win with just over 2/3 the vote in 2022 before resigning in 2023. Deevers’s margin of victory is considerably less than Montgomery’s but the turnout was just over 1/3 of 2022 because it was a special election.
In any case, this was a major victory for Oklahoma and the Christian Nationalist movement.
