The Chosen has amassed a worldwide fanbase on the premise of being a streamable TV show about the disciples of Christ. Unfortunately, showrunner Dallas Jenkins has failed to deliver a faithful adaptation of Scripture, as documented in several episodic reviews. With season five coming out next year, The Chosen is embarking on depicting Holy Week, despite skipping over the Transfiguration and other key events depicted in the gospels, and many have turned out to support the production.
The Chosen announced over 104K people donated to the Come and See Foundation to fund the fifth season of The Chosen from 151 countries. Despite Dallas Jenkins claiming not to be a ministry, the Come and See Foundation was set up as a 501c3 organization specifically to fund the production and marketing of The Chosen, which is a for-profit operation.
This is categorically legal because nonprofit ministries can take advantage of tax law in ways secular Hollywood cannot. In further proving to be a ministry, the Come and See Foundation has even produced sermon outlines akin to a dumbed-down version of Docent Research Group so that churches could use The Chosen to advance a shallow Prosperity Gospel.
Over 100k people donating to advance the He Gets Us campaign adapted into a television show is a disappointing development, but it’s a further example of Christians failing to apply discernment in stewarding their assets when there are so many worthy causes more deserving of money.
