Over the weekend, Evangelical Dark Web reported on how Trinity Bible Church hid in plain sight the fact that Steve Lawson was never a pastor at their church but rather a performer on Sunday mornings. Nevertheless, Steve Lawson was paraded across several ministries: One Passion Ministries, Ligonier, The Master’s University and Seminary, G3 Ministries, and Grace Community Church. In these circles, the idea of a “Lead Preacher” at a church with no pastoral or elder responsibilities is not accepted. While Trinity Bible Church might not have been forthright about this arrangement with Steve Lawson, they never hid it. The devil was in the details. Moreover, these ministries never asked questions while profiting from Steve Lawson’s celebrity and message.
Some of these ministries played a more active role in the development of Steve Lawson’s scandal. The Master’s University and Grace Community Church were both familiar with Lawson’s mistress, as she was a graduate of TMU and had gone to Grace Community Church before. Both of these ministries have scrubbed evidence but not before people could screenshot and draw attention.
The alleged mistress’s name is Jennifer Martin, a graduate of TMU and someone who was familiar with the Grace Community Church bookstore where some of the indiscretion was witnessed. In a since-deleted page on The Master’s University, Jennifer Martin is quoted stating:
Getting to hear preachers like Steve Lawson or Dr. MacArthur on a weekly basis encouraged my faith and grounded my beliefs in truth.
Despite deleting the page, it still shows up on search. Moreover, in a more damning piece of evidence, Grace Community Church posted a now-deleted picture of Steve Lawson pictured with Martin, not wearing a wedding ring.
Julie Roys published an article on the details of Martin’s relationship with Lawson but refused to name her. Instead, they have chosen to frame Jennifer Martin as an abuse victim when she was old enough to know better when the sinful relationship began. This is the fake news that Julie Roys is renowned for and also her greatest hypocrisy. This story was also reported on YouTube by Not By Sight News, who misrepresents the relationship as a student-teacher spiritual abuse. What Lawson did was bad enough without fabricating ways to make it even worse.
Conclusion
It’s possible that previously established relationships between Steve Lawson and his various ministry partners simply continued business as usual whilst Lawson made a vanity arrangement with Trinity Bible Church, and so his status as a pastor was never questioned.
After all, Steve Lawson was so generally respected that it was assumed he was living privately what he preached publicly and conformed to the ecclesiastical expectations of his various audiences. As this was not the case, Steve Lawson was a “lone ranger Christian” with zero accountability or meaningful investment in any local church.
And so he did what was right in his own eyes. John MacArthur has alluded to Lawson never being saved in the first place. The story is unfortunate in that his reported lack of repentance will invoke the severe wrath of God who holds teachers doubly accountable. Steve Lawson’s enlightenment of the gospel and subsequent rejection of it will be punished will have him wishing he was never born, lest he repent.
