Update: This article is now outdated. The Southern Baptist Convention has since reversed course.
In a major announcement that sent shockwaves across social media, the Southern Baptist Convention announced that Brent Leatherwood was fired from the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, an organization he has led since Russell Moore left in 2021. This comes one day after he praised Joe Biden’s selflessness for dropping out of the presidential race.
According to the ERLC’s announcement:
“In accordance with our bylaws, the executive committee has removed Brent Leatherwood as president. Further details, as well as plans for the transition, will be provided at our September board meeting. Until then, the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees will assume directional responsibility for carrying out the ministry assignments for the ERLC.”
The September meeting is from September 10-11 in Nashville, meaning more details are going to take a while.
But the ERLC’s inner circle of trustees decided that they had enough of Brent Leatherwood and fired him on Monday. Perhaps the ridiculous Joe Biden praise was a bridge too far for trustees who had put up with Leatherwood liberalism on gun control, amnesty, Ukraine, and opposition to pro-life legislature.
Russell Moore attacked the Southern Baptist Convention over firing his successor.
Shameful and disgraceful. A great Christian man who lived through his children barely surviving a school shooting. Southern Baptists, how much more of this are you going to let go on? You cannot pretend not to see what is happening in your name.
Brent Leatherwood has yet to make a statement.
This is a major win for Southern Baptists in that not only is Brent LEatherwood gone but was held accountable for his misdeeds rather than leaving on his own volition to achieve a higher-paying job. This level of accountability in Big Eva is rare.
