The Southern Baptist Convention has not had a good week in court, despite the promising news about the DOJ investigation. After heavily investing in an abuse crisis narrative, the Southern Baptist Convention found itself with multiple defamation lawsuits. The first one of prominence was from David Sills who was made out to be a sex abuser by the Guidepost Report for an inappropriate relationship with a fully adult woman, which he claims was not even sexual.
Despite an overall procedural victory, Sills took some losses. The case was against multiple parties, but Lifeway and Eric Geiger were dismissed from the lawsuit. Jennifer Lyell, the woman in the adulterous relationship, and Guidepost Solutions, the firm behind the report, were granted in part a motion to dismiss. The Southern Baptist Convention and the remaining parties were denied their motion to dismiss.
This was not as good an outcome for Sills as it was for Johnny Hunt.
